OT and skill development – Food preparation

Occupational Therapists can assist Participant’s to work towards their daily living skills. An example of this can be assistance with food preparation.

Here are some ways in which OTs can support the skill development required for food preparation:

  • Fine motor skills (e.g., chopping, stirring)
  • Coordination (e.g., coordination skills, enabling individuals to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in the kitchen)
  • Planning and organisation (e.g., creating shopping lists, scheduling cooking times,)
  • Safety awareness in the kitchen (e.g., handling hot surfaces and utensils, practicing proper food handling)

By addressing these skill areas, OTs help Participants gain confidence and independence in food preparation, where there can be a focus on a gradual transition to more independent food preparation over time. This contributes to increasing Participants functional abilities and autonomy.

As a mobile Allied Health service provider, Four Point Therapy OT’s can work with Participants in their home environments, leading to more real world application of therapy sessions.
